REDESIGNING THE HOOD
Using Culturally Aware Wellness as a Tool to Inform Architectural Design
“Personally, I remember sitting on the back stairs of my grandmother’s home in south Florida, eating mangoes and oranges from her trees, getting my hair braided by my big sister, and watching my uncles and cousins’ barbecue in the backyard, as jazz music played in the background. Scenes like these are very common in the Black community, and these are truthfully spaces that we are able to heal and find rest. African American culture has rooted communal celebration, food, and prayer into our wellness routines from the times before our ancestors were stolen from Africa.”
